Islamabad, Apr 16, 2025: A powerful earthquake struck several regions of Pakistan early on Wednesday morning, causing widespread tremors.
The quake was felt in areas across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab, including cities such as Peshawar, Landikotal, Mansehra, Nowshera, upper Dir, Attock, Swat, Malakand, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujrat, and Sialkot, among others.
In addition to Pakistan, the tremors were reportedly felt in neighboring countries like Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.
Residents in upper Punjab and various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa quickly took to social media to report the tremors.
According to the National Seismological Centre in Islamabad, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located in the Hindukush Mountain range of Afghanistan at a depth of 89 kilometers.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that the quake originated 69 kilometers from Parun in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale.
On April 12, Pakistan experienced two significant tremors within an hour, triggering panic in several cities. The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale, struck at 11:54 am.
Its epicenter was near the border between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, at a depth of 88 kilometers. The tremors were mainly felt in Swat and surrounding areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, briefly alarming local residents.
Just 36 minutes later, a second, stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 hit at 12:30 pm.
This quake’s epicenter was located 60 kilometers from Rawalpindi, with a much shallower depth of 12 kilometers.
The tremors affected several regions, including Islamabad, Gujar Khan, Haripur, Abbottabad, Attock, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Jhang, Taxila, Wah Cantt, and surrounding areas.
