Islamabad, Apr 25, 2025: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that high atmospheric pressure will begin to move towards the upper layers of the atmosphere starting from April 26th, and is expected to dominate most areas of the country by April 27th.
As a result of this atmospheric shift:
-
Daytime temperatures in the southern regions, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, are anticipated to stay 5 to 7°C higher than the average from April 26th to May 1st.
-
Daytime temperatures in the northern regions, which include central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, are expected to remain 4 to 6°C above normal between April 27th and April 30th.
Rainfall Anticipated in Northern Regions
A new weather system is predicted to enter the northern regions starting from April 30th.
This system will bring rain, along with possible winds and thunderstorms (including isolated heavy downpours or hailstorms), affecting Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, parts of northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan between April 30th and May 1st.
This weather system will help alleviate the ongoing heatwave conditions starting from May 1st.
Potential Impacts and Recommendations:
Due to the expected heatwave, it is advised that the general public—particularly children, women, and elderly individuals—take necessary precautions.
It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day and ensure adequate hydration.
Farmers should plan their activities, particularly wheat harvesting, in line with the weather forecast and take extra care of their livestock.
The rising temperatures in northern regions may speed up snowmelt, especially from April 27th to May 1st. It is important to use water resources efficiently across all sectors.
Windstorms, dust storms, hail, and lightning could potentially damage weak structures such as power poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels, particularly in Islamabad, the Pothohar region, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on April 30th and May 1st.
