Islamabad, Apr 16, 2025: In a remarkable academic milestone, the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology in Karachi, during its 66th Graduate Research Management Council session, awarded a PhD in Mass Communication to Saeed Masood Usmani.
The esteemed Professor Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan—an influential name in Pakistan’s journalism and literary circles—guided this extraordinary accomplishment.
However, Dr. Usmani’s research, titled “An Analytical Examination of FM Radio’s Popularity in Karachi,” explored the social and cultural reach of FM radio in the country’s most populous city.
What sets his work apart is its extensive scale and inclusivity.
Over 5,000 individuals from every district of Karachi—including 2,500 men, 2,226 women, and 400 transgender persons—participated in the study, making it one of the most comprehensive audience analyses in recent media studies.
What makes this achievement even more inspiring is Dr. Usmani’s age—he completed his doctorate at 80, despite facing serious health challenges including four heart attacks and a stroke.
His relentless drive to learn and his immense love for reading—often earning him the nickname “walking encyclopedia”—fueled his academic journey.
