Under the instructions of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the federal government has officially launched the 911 emergency helpline Pakistan nationwide to provide urgent assistance during the ongoing flood disaster. The service has been activated to ensure citizens receive quick support in natural calamities and other emergencies.

According to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the 911 emergency helpline is designed to function even in areas where mobile towers are damaged or inactive. The system automatically connects callers to the nearest available operational tower, regardless of the telecom provider, ensuring uninterrupted access to life-saving services.

A ministry spokesperson explained that people affected by floods, accidents, or any emergency can dial 911 for instant help. However, citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary calls so that resources remain available for those in critical need.

This helpline, part of the Pakistan Emergency Helpline (PEHL) project, integrates essential services under one platform, including police, rescue, health, fire brigade, and disaster response. Originally introduced in 2022, the service has now been reactivated and upgraded to meet the rising demand amid severe weather conditions.

The Ministry emphasized that beyond immediate response, the system also acts as a data collection tool to analyze emergency patterns and resource requirements across different regions. This allows authorities to enhance disaster preparedness and allocate relief efficiently.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported alarming figures from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where cloudbursts and flash floods in the past 24 hours resulted in 229 deaths and over 40 injuries. Districts hit the hardest include Buner with 91 fatalities, Shangla with 35, Mansehra with 23, Bajaur with 21, and Swat with 20 casualties.
