The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), through action against cartels and deceptive business practices, as well as active pursuit of pending cases in courts and resulting verdicts, has recovered fines exceeding one billion rupees. The sub-committee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) appreciated this performance of the CCP and assured full cooperation.

The sub-committee meeting was chaired by Member National Assembly Shahida Begum. During the meeting, CCP Chairman Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu gave a detailed briefing on the commission’s recent performance.

Dr. Sidhu informed the committee that due to the commission’s proactive follow-up, more than 50 percent of pending court cases have been decided, reducing the number of cases from 567 to 280, leading to recoveries of one billion rupees.

It was further stated that last year, the commission issued 14 decisions against cartels and imposed fines of over one billion rupees. Additionally, 20 inquiries into cartels and abuse of dominance, and 18 inquiries into misleading marketing practices, were completed.

He further informed the committee that the commission recently established a dedicated Market Intelligence Unit (MIU), which has so far identified over 190 potential anti-competitive cases. Moreover, a “Centre of Excellence on Competition Law” has also been set up to promote research, capacity building, and policymaking.

Dr. Kabir Sidhu added that the commission approved 117 mergers and acquisitions, resulting in direct foreign investment of 29 billion rupees in the country.
