Chairman WAPDA, Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed (Retd), welcomed World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, Ms. Bolormaa Amgabbazar, in a meeting focused on the financial aspects of the Dasu and Tarbela 5th Extension hydropower initiatives.

A press release highlighted the Chairman’s gratitude toward the World Bank for its pivotal role as a development ally in tapping Pakistan’s hydropower potential.

Emphasizing the critical role of the Dasu and Tarbela 5th Extension projects in securing Pakistan’s energy future, the Chairman noted that these endeavors will deliver cost-effective, clean electricity, fostering socio-economic growth. He also expressed optimism that the Institutional Assessment and Reforms Consultancy Services (IARC) would enhance WAPDA’s organizational strength and efficiency, aligning it with global standards.

Ms. Amgabbazar reaffirmed the World Bank’s ongoing financial backing for WAPDA’s hydropower efforts, praising the authority’s dedication to advancing sustainable, green energy solutions in Pakistan. The World Bank is currently providing $1.517 billion for the first phase of the Dasu Hydropower Project and $390 million for the Tarbela 5th Extension, alongside funding for the IARC initiative.

Notably, the 4320 MW Dasu Hydropower Project, located on the River Indus in Upper Kohistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is under construction, with its initial phase set to produce 2160 MW. Meanwhile, the Tarbela 5th Extension Project, built on Tunnel No. 5 of Tarbela Dam, boasts a capacity of 1530 MW.
