The federal government plans to launch the high-speed rail service between Islamabad and Rawalpindi on March 23, offering residents of the twin cities a faster and more affordable transport option.
As highlighted in a report by Bloom earlier, the rail link will connect Islamabad’s Margalla Railway Station with Saddar Railway Station in Rawalpindi, reducing travel time between the two points to just 20 minutes.
The first phase will make use of the existing railway track, while a second phase will later expand the service to other parts of the federal capital.
The service will run on the existing track and will require modern Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs), which are expected to be imported from China or another foreign source.
The procurement process may take a minimum of one month, while the formal PC-I of the project will be submitted to the Planning Division in the near future.

To improve connectivity, CDA’s electric buses will function as feeder services to Margalla Station, complemented by the existing metro bus links to the station.
