Pakistan is preparing to roll out 5G services within the coming months, beginning with seven major cities, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 26th ITCN Asia Expo at Expo Centre Karachi, she said steps were underway to improve nationwide internet reliability.

Her remarks came as concerns remain about the financial challenges of transitioning to 5G, a shift the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has previously warned could be difficult despite growing broadband and mobile penetration.

The minister added that information technology would be a central element of the recently signed Pakistan-Saudi agreement, aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure and boosting economic growth.

She also noted that the country had moved past fears of default, with inflation easing and macroeconomic conditions stabilizing. “Karachi carries the weight of the country’s economic development,” she said.
