The Sindh government has expedited preparations to roll out Pakistan’s first government-run taxi service, introducing electric vehicle (EV) taxis by December 2025.
A high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon was held on Monday in Karachi. It was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, and other officials.
During the briefing, Minister Memon confirmed that the provincial government would launch its own taxi service for the first time in Pakistan, starting with EV taxis. He said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had taken a special interest in ensuring the public receives modern, eco-friendly, and high-quality transport facilities. In the initial phase, a dedicated fleet of EV taxis will be reserved for women.

Memon noted that Sindh had already pioneered eco-friendly initiatives such as electric buses, the Pink Bus for women, and the pink electric scooter scheme for female students. The introduction of the pink EV taxi for women marks another first in the country’s transport sector.
He further stated that double-decker buses and additional EV buses will soon be added in Karachi, alongside the development of EV charging stations and related infrastructure to ensure sustainability of the project.
He also highlighted that Karachi’s transport sector offers strong investment potential for international partners, with the government ready to extend maximum support.
