The federal government has finalized a plan to replace 350,000 three-phase meters in LESCO with modern AMI smart meters. According to officials, the initiative aims to improve power distribution and reduce electricity theft.
For the project, LESCO has approached NEPRA to seek additional budget approval. Once cleared, the company will be allowed to spend billions on the replacement drive. Sources said each AMI smart meter will cost around Rs42,000, requiring an estimated total budget of Rs10 billion.

The Power Division has directed all power distribution companies including LESCO, to shift towards smart systems. In addition, the ministry has asked LESCO to submit details of loans and financing required to cover the project’s expenses.
