A major groundwater recharge project in Lahore has been launched to address the city’s falling water table. The Punjab Housing Department has prepared a plan to build 1,000 recharge wells across the provincial capital to help restore underground water levels and promote sustainable water use.
During a visit to the Liberty Chowk recharge well site, Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal reviewed the progress of the project. Managing Director WASA, Ghafran Ahmed, briefed the secretary on the site’s functioning and explained that each recharge well can absorb up to 8,000 gallons of water daily.
At present, three such wells are operational in Lahore, while construction is underway at 15 other locations.
According to Mengal, the initiative follows the directions of the Punjab Chief Minister to adopt modern engineering solutions for environmental sustainability. He added that the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Lahore will allocate space in all public parks for groundwater recharge wells. Special care will also be taken to protect existing trees during construction.

Mengal further reaffirmed that all government departments are committed to completing the project with serious intent and efficiency.
