The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has withdrawn its earlier strict decisions regarding passing marks and attendance requirements for medical and dental students.
According to reports, a notification has been issued by the council stating that the passing marks for medical students have once again been set at 50%, while the required attendance has been restored to 75%.
Earlier this year, PMDC had increased the passing marks to 65%, which has now been canceled. The latest notification has also nullified the previous notifications issued on January 31, February 10, and April 15, 2025.
The new decision will apply to the academic session 2024–2025.
Similarly, the previous decision regarding attendance has also been reversed. Now, MBBS and BDS students must maintain 75% attendance, whereas the earlier requirement had been increased to 85%.
For future admissions, it has been proposed that both passing marks and attendance requirements should be increased by 5%. This proposal will be finalized after consultation with universities and other relevant stakeholders.
PMDC has directed all medical and dental universities to immediately implement the new regulations.
It is worth mentioning that on February 3, 2025, PMDC had announced an increase in passing marks to 70% and attendance to 90% to improve educational standards. However, the decision faced strong criticism from students and educational institutions.

After receiving recommendations from student organizations and universities, the council reviewed the matter and restored the previous standards, making academic requirements relatively easier for medical and dental students.
