Islamabad, Fe 1: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has taken a significant step toward modernizing geological education by updating its degree curricula to align with the latest trends and technological advancements in the field.
This overhaul is designed to meet the evolving needs of the industry while ensuring students acquire relevant skills to thrive in a competitive global landscape.
A two-day consultative session, led by Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Muhammad Shah at the HEC Regional Center in Lahore, brought together geology experts and senior faculty members from various universities. These experts collaboratively worked on revising the curricula for Associate Degree, Bachelor of Science (BS), and Master of Science (MS) programs in Geology.
The goal was to create a curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical applications, ensuring students are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in the field.
One of the most notable changes in the updated curricula is the introduction of specialized courses focused on emerging technologies. Courses such as “AI & Computational Geology” and other modules integrating artificial intelligence (AI), computational modeling, and geospatial analytics have been incorporated.

These new additions will enable students to explore and apply cutting-edge technologies in geological research, geophysical data analysis, and environmental management.

Once approved by the HEC management, these revised curricula will be shared with universities across Pakistan for immediate implementation.
