Islamabad, Feb 2: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has intensified efforts to finalize the design of Islamabad’s first-ever cricket stadium, following directives from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Chairing a late-night meeting at CDA headquarters, the minister expressed dissatisfaction over delays and urged swift action to launch the long-awaited project.
CDA to Hire Consultant for Stadium Design
To accelerate progress, CDA is set to hire a professional consultant to design the stadium. Previously, several meetings between CDA and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were held to discuss construction plans. However, the project faced delays due to the absence of a finalized design.
Prime Location Near Margalla Hills Considered
While the exact location is yet to be officially confirmed, sources suggest that the stadium will be developed near D-12, in the foothills of the picturesque Margalla Hills. Last year, CDA announced that the stadium, along with a hotel, would be built in this area, with an expected seating capacity of over 50,000, making it the largest in Pakistan.

CDA and PCB Partnership for 5-Year Completion Plan
Under the initial agreement, PCB will oversee construction, aiming for completion within five years. CDA plans to allocate 280 kanals on a 99-year lease, ensuring a long-term commitment to Islamabad’s sports infrastructure. Revenue generated from the stadium is expected to be split between PCB and CDA in a 70:30 ratio.
Shakarparian Project Scrapped by Supreme Court
Previously, efforts to build a cricket stadium in Shakarparian were abandoned after the Supreme Court ruled against it. The area, initially earmarked for sports facilities in Islamabad’s 1960 master plan, was later incorporated into a national park, halting development.
Other Major Projects Under Discussion
During the meeting, several other key projects were reviewed, including:
- Margalla Road Extension: Plans to extend the road up to the motorway.
- Traffic Management at Faizabad: Strategies to ease congestion at the busy interchange.
- Safari Park, Chairlift, and Zip Line: Proposals to enhance recreational facilities in Islamabad.
- Commercial Strips Along Expressway: CDA is exploring development opportunities along the expressway while ensuring environmental conservation.
With Islamabad’s rapid urban expansion, the launch of the city’s first cricket stadium marks a major milestone, promising to boost sports culture and infrastructure development in the capital.
