Islamabad, Feb 12: On Safer Internet Day, observed on February 11, 2025, cybersecurity experts are raising concerns about increasing online threats, particularly on popular gaming platforms like Roblox. With millions of young users worldwide, Roblox has become a prime target for cybercriminals looking to exploit unsuspecting players.
Over 1.6 Million Cyberattacks Linked to Roblox in 2024
Recent cybersecurity reports indicate a sharp rise in cyber threats associated with Roblox. In 2024 alone, more than 1.6 million cyberattacks were detected, disguised as Roblox-related files. August saw the highest number of incidents, with 179,286 attacks, followed by 160,116 in September and 151,638 in October.

Roblox’s immense popularity, especially among children, makes it an attractive avenue for cybercriminals who embed malware into seemingly harmless files like mods, cheats, or free in-game currency generators. Many players unknowingly download these infected files, compromising their personal data and device security.
The Growing Threat of Online Scams
One of the most prevalent scams involves fake offers for free in-game currency. Users are often tricked into providing their game ID or username and selecting their platform (Android, iOS, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo) to make it appear like an official process. Once engaged, victims are directed to complete “verification” tasks, such as online surveys, in exchange for valuable rewards like an iPhone or PlayStation.
However, to claim the prize, victims are asked to pay for delivery fees, only to realize that they have been scammed. Their money is lost, and no reward is delivered.
Keeping Children Safe Online
As cybercriminals continue to evolve their tactics, digital safety education is more crucial than ever. Vasily Kolesnikov, a cybersecurity expert, emphasizes the importance of integrating cybersecurity awareness into children’s online activities. He recommends essential safety measures such as:

- Avoiding third-party downloads and using only official sources.
- Educating young gamers about phishing scams and deceptive offers.
