Islamabad, Mar 12 2025: Islamabad United have confirmed the departure of Azhar Mahmood ahead of the 10th edition, scheduled to take place from April 11 to May 18.
The three-time Pakistan Super League champions stated that the ongoing commitment of the former cricketer to the national team was the primary reason for the decision.
He has been replaced by former New Zealand cricketer Ian Butler, who represented his country in eight Tests, 26 ODIs, and 19 T20Is between 2002 and 2013.
In an official statement, Islamabad United described the appointment of Butler as a step towards further strengthening the bowling department of the United.
The management also acknowledged his contributions, recalling his role in the victories both as a player in PSL 2016 and later as an assistant coach during their 2024 campaign.
Reacting to his new role, Butler expressed enthusiasm about working with Islamabad United, marking his first coaching experience in Pakistan.
He noted that he had heard positive things about the cricketing culture in Pakistan and looked forward to contributing to the success of the franchise.
While reflecting on Mahmood’s tenure, Butler recognized the former coach’s efforts and expressed a desire to build upon the foundation laid by him.
Islamabad United, known for its strategic moves, aims to maintain its legacy in PSL 10 with this coaching transition.
