Islamabad, Mar 13, 2025: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is poised for its most significant transformation yet, as the tournament plans to expand from six to eight teams.
PSL CEO Salman Naseer confirmed the strategic vision of the league, highlighting the extensive groundwork required for a smooth and competitive transition.
Naseer indicated that discussions were already underway regarding the inclusion of two new franchises by the end of the year 2025.
Salman Naseer emphasized that ongoing developments continuously rejuvenate the tournament, enhancing its appeal and fan engagement.
Since its inception, the PSL has grown significantly, shifting from the UAE to a fully home-based league, symbolizing the cricket resurgence of Pakistan.
He recalled the challenge of restoring international cricket in Pakistan and emphasized on the expansion of PSL while maintaining high standards and competitive balance.
Beyond adding new teams, PSL 2026 is set to expand its geographical reach, bringing cricket to new cities and engaging a broader fan base.
Peshawar will host an exhibition match, paving the way for future PSL fixtures, while the trophy tours nationwide for the first time, connecting fans in non-hosting cities.
Also, PSL officials are exploring the introduction of fan parks, enabling supporters beyond major urban centers to experience the tournament in an immersive setting.
Naseer highlighted the significance of these initiatives, stating that expanding beyond traditional venues represents a natural progression for the league.
Meanwhile, the increasing number of global T20 leagues has raised concerns over player workload management of the national players.
Naseer acknowledged this challenge, stressing the importance of balancing player participation across leagues while ensuring their performance in international cricket remains a priority.
Despite competition from emerging leagues such as SA20 and ILT20, PSL remains confident in its established January-February window.
The upcoming season will serve as a key test, particularly with the league’s expansion on the horizon.
