Islamabad, Apr 23, 2025: For the first time, the UK government is preparing to unveil a detailed breakdown of the nationalities of foreign offenders residing in the country.
As per recent reports, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has directed officials to compile and publish this information—along with crime-specific data—before the year ends.
Recent government statistics show that more than 19,000 foreign criminals were awaiting deportation at the end of last year.
This figure has climbed since the Conservatives exited office, when the number stood at just under 18,000. A senior Home Office official shared that the move aims to shed light on the origin of these offenders and give the public transparent access to the data.
While critics from the Conservative Party claim Labour is bending to political pressure for transparency, sources close to the Home Secretary argue the disclosure is only now possible due to system overhauls initiated by Cooper.
The existing laws automatically consider any foreign individual sentenced to 12 months or more in jail for deportation.
Several challenges have complicated the deportation process, including early releases caused by overcrowded prisons, diplomatic issues in repatriation, and a rise in legal appeals based on human rights grounds.

Nonetheless, the number of deportations has seen an uptick since Labour assumed office.
Home Office figures are expected to show that Albanians, Romanians, and Polish nationals make up the largest groups of foreign offenders.
These individuals frequently commit crimes such as drug-related offenses, theft, burglary, and acts of violence.
Insiders within the government emphasize that Labour is confronting a long-neglected issue.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “We’re now deporting foreign offenders at a pace unmatched by previous leadership. We’re also being more open about who these individuals are and the nature of their crimes.”
Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick responded to the move, stating: “This will uncover the stark reality that unchecked migration contributes to rising crime. The public has deserved this level of transparency for years.”
