Islamabad, May 8, 2025: Light rain in Lahore on Thursday brought a refreshing change to the city’s sweltering conditions, offering temporary relief to residents and putting local authorities on their toes.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) was placed on high alert to manage the situation and prevent urban flooding, especially in low-lying zones.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Lahore’s light rain was most notable in Paniwala Talab with 2mm recorded, while Gulberg, Upper Mall, and Tajpura saw 1mm each.
Though modest in volume, the showers cooled down the city after a week of rising temperatures and heavy humidity.
In response, WASA’s Vice Chairman issued urgent directives to keep all pumping and disposal stations fully functional. “All generators must be kept on standby to deal with any power outages,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted operations to prevent rainwater accumulation.
He added that immediate generator backup must be deployed in case of power failures to avoid drainage issues.
Managing Director WASA personally assessed field readiness and instructed zonal heads to stay present on-site throughout the rainy spell.
Field staff has also been deployed in flood-prone areas to monitor and respond quickly.

The Meteorological Office predicts more light to moderate showers over the next few hours, particularly in the city’s eastern and northern belts.
Residents are urged to monitor official weather updates and avoid non-essential travel in areas with historically poor drainage infrastructure.
Experts suggest that while this Lahore rain offers brief comfort, the city’s preparedness infrastructure needs long-term upgrades to manage increasingly unpredictable weather patterns due to climate change.
