Islamabad, 17 May, 2025: Shan Masood is reportedly set to lose his role as Pakistan’s Test captain, as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly preparing for a significant leadership change.
According to sources, the new Test captain likely to be named before Pakistan hosts South Africa in a home series this October. .
According to insiders, Saud Shakeel has emerged as a strong candidate to take over the red-ball captaincy, although no official confirmation has been issued so far.
This move is said to be part of a broader restructuring of Pakistan’s Test cricket setup, which could also involve changes within the coaching department.

Shan Masood, who was appointed as Test captain in November 2023, has struggled to deliver consistent results. During his tenure, Pakistan managed just three victories in 12 Test matches, while facing defeat in nine.
Their performance in the ICC World Test Championship 2023–25 has been particularly disappointing, with the team currently placed at the bottom end of the points table in ninth position.
Pakistan suffered ample losses against Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa, managing series wins only against Sri Lanka and England.

A drawn tournament with the West Indies did little to ease growing concerns about strategic shortcomings and leadership direction.
In contrast, Saud Shakeel has solidified his role as a reliable figure in Pakistan’s middle order. Averaging above 50 since his Test debut, his dependable batting and composed temperament have caught the attention of the PCB selectors.
PCB officials are believed to be impressed by Shakeel’s ability to merge consistent personal performances with strategic team leadership, qualities that are consider crucial in reshaping Pakistan’s Test identity.
