Islamabad, May 20, 2025: In a bold move to tackle worsening urban traffic congestion, the Punjab government has greenlit the development of dedicated model rickshaw stops across all major cities under the Punjab Development Program.

This strategic initiative aims to transform the province’s public transportation landscape by introducing organized, fixed points for rickshaw pick-up and drop-off.

Unlike the current ad-hoc system, these rickshaw stops in Punjab will follow standardized infrastructure guidelines to ensure consistency and usability.

Experts believe this step could significantly enhance road discipline, especially in densely populated areas like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi. “This is a game-changer for daily commuters,” said an urban planning consultant. “Structured stops reduce road hazards and help streamline the flow of traffic.”

By centralizing rickshaw operations into designated zones, the program is set to reduce roadside congestion and improve accessibility for passengers.

Not only will this reduce confusion for both riders and drivers, but it will also promote a more professional transport system, similar to models seen in cities like Delhi and Bangkok.

Implementation will be carried out in close coordination with local municipal bodies to ensure smooth integration and adherence to quality benchmarks.

Each stop will feature clear signage, waiting areas, and may even include digital tracking solutions in later phases to modernize public commuting further.

The Punjab model rickshaw stop plan also reflects the government’s broader vision for sustainable and people-friendly urban infrastructure.

With more than 70% of urban commuters relying on rickshaws daily, this move stands to benefit thousands by cutting down travel delays and enhancing safety on the roads.
