Islamabad, May 21, 2025: Pakistan is likely to celebrate Eidul Adha 2025 on Saturday, June 7, as astronomical forecasts suggest that the Zilhaj moon will be visible on May 28. With anticipation growing, astronomers point to strong lunar indicators that place the Islamic festival just around the corner.

Prominent space scientist Dr. Faheem Hashmi has provided detailed insight into the moon cycle, noting that the new moon on May 27 will be too young—around 11 hours old—to be visible at sunset. This means moon sighting on that day is highly unlikely.

However, a shift is expected the next evening. “On May 28, the moon will be over 35 hours old, significantly improving visibility across much of Pakistan,” Dr. Hashmi stated. This leads to the likelihood of Zilhaj commencing on May 29 and Eidul Adha falling on the 10th of Zilhaj, i.e., June 7.

Eidul Adha, known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is the second major Islamic event after Eidul Fitr. It honors the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was ready to sacrifice his son in submission to God’s will—a moment marked in Islamic history with spiritual significance and traditional animal sacrifice.

While astronomical predictions are helpful, the official date depends on the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. This committee gathers moon sighting reports from across Pakistan before confirming the start of any Islamic month. The committee’s formal announcement will finalize the date for Eid celebrations.

In 2024, Eidul Adha was observed on June 17, showcasing how lunar variations shift the festival date every year. Countries like Saudi Arabia also rely on similar lunar predictions, but national differences in sighting protocols often result in varied celebration dates.
