Islamabad, 23 May 2025: Abbas Afridi has become a focal point of debate following his unexpected omission from Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh.

The decision has prompted criticism from former national cricketer Kamran Akmal, who believes the young pacer’s exclusion undermines consistent domestic and international performances.

Former Players Question Selection Policy

During a recent media interaction, Kamran Akmal expressed his disapproval of the selection choices, calling Abbas Afridi’s exclusion “unfair.”

He pointed out that the fast bowler has maintained a strong record, particularly in T20 cricket, with 33 wickets from 20 matches.

Akmal indicated that more opportunities should have been extended to players like Abbas Afridi, Khurram Shahzad, and Sufiyan Muqeem, especially with established bowlers like Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah already well-settled in the squad.

He also highlighted the imbalance in the current lineup, noting the inclusion of nine batters, five of whom are openers, as evidence of unclear planning ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Squad Changes and Selection Strategy Under Fire

Akmal raised concerns over recent changes in the squad, particularly the contrast between selections for the New Zealand and Bangladesh series.

He questioned whether team management was prioritising the right matches for experimentation and development.

Meanwhile, Abbas Afridi remains in excellent form during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season.

Representing Karachi Kings, the 24-year-old has emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 17 scalps in 10 matches at an average of 20.64 and an economy rate of 10.02.

Revised T20I Schedule Announced

In a related update, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed both the squad and the amended schedule for the Bangladesh series. Initially set for five matches, the series has been reduced to three due to logistical limitations.

The matches will take place at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium between May 28 and June 1, all starting at 8:00 PM local time.

The series will also mark the first assignment for newly appointed head coach Mike Hesson, adding another layer of interest to what is expected to be a closely watched contest.

With Abbas Afridi left out despite his current form, discussions around Pakistan’s team selection strategy are unlikely to quiet down soon.
