Islamabad, 23 May 2025: Traffic Law in Karachi is set to enter a new digital era as authorities roll out camera-based traffic enforcement from June 1, imposing hefty penalties on violators, especially heavy vehicle operators.

Speaking on the city’s growing traffic challenges, Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah explained that the current manpower of approximately 5,500 personnel is insufficient to control Karachi’s increasingly complex road environment.

As a solution, law enforcement is turning to technology, marking a shift in how traffic violations will be managed.

The core of the initiative is the launch of electronic challans (e-tickets), which will be issued using surveillance cameras installed across major routes. Violators will receive fines electronically, eliminating the need for on-the-spot ticketing.

This, officials believe, will not only streamline enforcement but also allow traffic officers to focus more on managing congestion.

Traffic Law in Karachi will now include harsh penalties for speeding, particularly targeting heavy vehicles, which are restricted to a maximum speed of 30 km/h within city limits. Any breach of this rule could result in fines of up to Rs. 20,000.

The grace period ends with May, and authorities have confirmed that no leniency will be shown after enforcement begins in June.

Further strengthening the system, all large commercial vehicles will be required to have operational GPS trackers connected to the city’s central traffic monitoring system. Failure to comply will lead to vehicle impoundment, officials warned.

Emphasizing long-term solutions, Shah highlighted the pressing issue of illegal parking, pointing out that the lack of designated parking spaces often leaves motorists with no alternative.

He urged city planners to develop proper parking zones to support sustainable traffic management.

As the implementation date draws near, Traffic Law in Karachi is undergoing a major transformation one that aims to bring discipline to the roads through technology and strict regulation.
