Islamabad, 26 May 2025: Saudi authorities have refuted claims circulated by some international media outlets suggesting that the Kingdom intends to legalise alcohol sales by 2026.
According to credible Saudi sources, such reports are unfounded and not based on any official announcements or existing regulatory frameworks.
Officials familiar with the matter emphasised that Saudi Arabia continues to uphold its longstanding policies regarding alcohol, with no plans currently under consideration to alter the existing ban.
These sources clarified that no confirmation has been issued by relevant institutions and that any suggestion of policy change is purely speculative.

In the context of the Kingdom’s rapidly expanding tourism industry, Saudi representatives reiterated that the government remains focused on delivering a culturally rich and authentic visitor experience.
They stated that the development of the tourism sector is being pursued in line with the values and traditions of Saudi society, and this strategy has been positively received by a growing number of global travellers.
Many tourists reportedly appreciate the chance to explore the Kingdom’s heritage sites, desert landscapes, and coastal regions in a way that respects local customs.
Addressing recent discussions around alcohol availability for non-Muslim diplomats, officials clarified that Saudi Arabia has adopted a new regulatory mechanism. This updated framework is designed to control and monitor the contents of diplomatic consignments.
Under the new approach, embassies from non-Muslim countries are no longer permitted to include alcohol or certain other restricted items in their official shipments.
However, the sources noted that limited, regulated access may still be granted under tight oversight to prevent misuse and ensure compliance with international standards.

Saudi officials also highlighted the robust growth of the tourism industry, which has become a key contributor to the national economy.
In 2024, the country received approximately 29.7 million international visitors, marking an 8% increase from the 27.4 million recorded in 2023.
Tourism expenditure reached a total of 283.8 billion Saudi riyals, with foreign tourists accounting for 168.5 billion riyals of that sum.
This momentum, officials noted, reflects Saudi Arabia’s ability to attract global interest without compromising its cultural principles.
