Islamabad, 27 May 2025: Sindhi Cap and Ajrak symbols of Sindh’s vibrant heritage have been officially barred from being presented at state-run ceremonies, following a fresh notification issued by the Sindh Education Department on Tuesday.

According to the directive, government officials and educational institutions have been instructed to stop the exchange of traditional gifts such as Sindhi Cap and Ajrak during formal events. The ban also extends to the common practice of students greeting or welcoming guests at public gatherings.

Focus Shifts from Ceremony to Substance

The circular, issued from the provincial capital Karachi, was disseminated to all government schools and educational entities across Sindh. Authorities have been directed to ensure strict implementation of the new regulations.

Officials explained that the purpose of this decision is to remove unnecessary ceremonial elements from public functions and establish greater consistency in official events.

The department clarified that the restriction applies to all official venues whether schools, colleges, or other government institutions and aims to shift attention from formal traditions to the primary objectives of such events.

Staff and officers have been warned that non-compliance with the order could result in disciplinary measures.

While some observers have welcomed the policy as a step toward modernization, others have voiced concern over the removal of long-standing cultural gestures, such as the Sindhi Cap and Ajrak, from state proceedings.

The decision has triggered a wider public conversation about balancing administrative efficiency with the preservation of regional identity.

Sindhi Cap and Ajrak, once staples of ceremonial hospitality, now find themselves at the heart of a debate on evolving governance and cultural expression in Sindh’s public sector.
