Islamabad, May 29, 2025: Elon Musk has announced that he is leaving the Trump administration, where he invest months leading a project to cut costs in the federal government.
Taking to X, his own social media platform, Musk wrote, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.”
He referred to DOGE, “Department of Government Efficiency” as a mission that would “only strengthen over time,” though he expressed growing disappointment with Washington bureaucracy.
A White House official confirmed to Reuters that Elon Musk leaving Trump administration was indeed underway, stating that the off-boarding process would begin immediately. Sources say Musk made the decision without a direct conversation with Trump, and the departure was finalized at the senior staff level.
During his 130-day spell, Musk was granted unusual authority to slash government costs and fix federal departments. Despite cutting nearly 260,000 civilian federal jobs, Musk had become increasingly frustrated. He publicly criticized Trump’s tax bill, calling it counterproductive to DOGE’s goals and clashed with cabinet members including Peter Navarro, whom he labeled a “moron” over trade policy disagreements.

Behind closed doors, Musk was reportedly angered by a deal between OpenAI and Abu Dhabi, which excluded his AI firm. His recent political disappointment was also compounded by the failure of a judicial candidate he backed in Wisconsin, despite investing $25 million in the race.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO had pledged to reduce his political spending after pouring nearly $300 million into Trump’s re-election efforts. “I think I’ve done enough,” Musk said during a recent forum in Qatar.
Though his time in Washington is ending, the DOGE initiative will reportedly continue without him.
