The federal government of Pakistan has announced a significant step towards expanding higher education by planning to establish five new public sector universities across the country. This development is part of the upcoming Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the fiscal year 2025-26, with an allocated budget of over Rs. 9 billion.
Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, revealed that these universities will be strategically located in various regions to improve access to quality higher education and promote balanced regional development. The government aims to meet the growing demand for higher education while creating new opportunities for students nationwide.

This initiative is expected to not only enhance educational prospects but also stimulate local economies and support Pakistan’s broader vision of knowledge-based growth. It builds upon earlier efforts by the government, including the establishment of engineering universities and knowledge parks across the country.
However, concerns about financial sustainability and maintaining educational quality amid rapid expansion have been voiced by the Vice Chancellors’ Committee. These issues will need careful attention as the project moves forward.
Further details about the exact locations and academic programs of the new universities are yet to be announced, but the government’s commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s higher education infrastructure remains firm.
