Islamabad, June 9, 2025: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has sounded a heatwave alert in Pakistan, warning of extreme temperatures from June 9 to June 12 due to the emergence of a high-pressure system over the region.
According to the Met Office weather forecast, daytime temperatures are anticipated to soar 5°C to 7°C above seasonal norms across central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Similarly, areas in upper and central Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan are expected to witness temperatures 4°C to 6°C above normal during the same period.
Increased atmospheric heating may trigger dust storms and gusty winds, particularly across the plains, heightening concerns for public safety and visibility.
Authorities have advised residents, especially children, elderly, and women, to limit outdoor activities, stay in shaded areas, and drink plenty of water to prevent heat-related illnesses. Experts strongly recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, particularly during peak hours of the day.
Additionally, meteorologists have cautioned that the rising heat levels could accelerate snowmelt in northern regions, possibly affecting water flow in rivers and streams.
