Islamabad, June 19, 2025: Pakistan have secured their place in the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2025 in Kuala Lumpur after ending second in their pool, thanks to a better goal average even though they only earned four points during the group stage.

The Green Shirts, who drew 3-3 with host Malaysia and beat Japan 3-2 earlier in the tournament, benefitted from Malaysia’s narrow 2-1 win against Japan on Tuesday. Malaysia needed a two-goal victory to overtake Pakistan, but fell short despite the win.

With that, Pakistan finished behind France in the group standings but stayed ahead of Malaysia, who also had four points but a lower goal difference. The national team will now face Pool A leaders France in the first semi-final of FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2025 on Friday.

The road to the semis wasn’t exactly smooth for Pakistan. In their opening match, they drew 3-3 against Malaysia after conceding a late goal. While the match showed strong attacking efforts, it also exposed gaps in Pakistan’s defence.
