Pakistan is gripped by a severe water crisis amid a relentless summer heatwave, threatening both farming and drinking supplies.
The crucial Khanpur Dam, vital for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, now holds just 25 days of usable water. Its levels have plummeted dangerously close to the “dead level.”
This emergency has already halted irrigation to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leaving canals dry and orchards in the Khanpur area parched.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi are receiving drastically reduced water, with supplies expected to hit zero if dam inflow doesn’t improve.
Experts warn that millions in Rawalpindi and Islamabad face a severe drinking water shortage without immediate rain. The region’s agricultural economy, especially fruit orchards, is at risk of irreparable damage.
