Islamabad, June 22, 2025: In a major push to enhance regional connectivity and economic development, the government has greenlit a Rs180 million upgrade of Skardu International Airport, positioning it as a future hub for tourism and trade in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The project is being spearheaded by renowned Swiss aviation consultancy Intairplan in collaboration with local Pakistani partners. Once the design phase is finalized, construction is expected to begin within the next year. This strategic infrastructure investment is expected to significantly uplift the tourism sector, promote cross-border trade, and create job opportunities in the region.

Skardu, already a gateway to some of Pakistan’s most iconic peaks and valleys, including K2, Deosai National Park, and Shigar Valley, stands to benefit greatly from improved air access. With the upgraded Skardu International Airport, travel will become easier for both domestic and international tourists, further boosting the region’s visibility on the global tourism map.

Officials and stakeholders have praised the development as a critical step toward regional integration and sustainable development. “This initiative will not only improve air travel infrastructure but will also catalyze economic growth across Gilgit-Baltistan,” stated a senior government official.

The upgrade reflects the government’s broader vision to improve infrastructure in Northern Pakistan, attract international tourism, and create lasting economic impact. Once completed, the revamped airport is expected to handle higher traffic volumes, offer better passenger facilities, and enable direct international flights to Skardu.
