Islamabad, June 23, 2025: In a shocking escalation, former U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a bombing campaign on Iran’s suspected nuclear facilities, drawing swift and polarized reactions from lawmakers across Missouri and Illinois. The strike, carried out without prior Congressional approval, has ignited a firestorm over constitutional authority and the risk of a new Middle East war.
Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, a decorated combat veteran, strongly condemned the move. “The Trump Administration illegally bombed Iran tonight, putting American troops and citizens at risk of retaliation,” Duckworth said. “This should have been pursued through diplomacy first, not an unauthorized act of war.”
Senator Dick Durbin, also from Illinois, recalled the cost of past conflicts. “Trump’s bombing of Iran brings us to the brink of another war in the Middle East — all without the required approval from Congress,” Durbin stated. “Let Iraq serve as a reminder of the dangers of unilateral military action.”
Adding to the constitutional concerns, Illinois Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski emphasized that “only Congress has the power to declare war.” While acknowledging Iran’s aggression and affirming support for Israel, Budzinski advocated for “aggressive diplomacy and Congressional consultation” over any military operation.
Across the border in Missouri, political reactions varied. Governor Mike Kehoe praised Trump’s decision, posting on X:
“President Trump and our brave military demonstrated the importance of strength in pursuit of peace… Missourians stand with our heroes at Whiteman Air Force Base.”
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas took a more cautious tone. “I pray for the safety of our troops,” he said. “But I also urge Congress to exercise its authority and prevent another prolonged Middle Eastern conflict.”
Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II echoed those constitutional concerns. “Trump’s bombing of three Iranian sites was unconstitutional. Only Congress can declare war,” he warned.
As tensions flare, the debate intensifies over whether this bold military move ensures national security — or repeats the costly mistakes of past Middle East wars.
