Islamabad, June 24, 2025: A notification has been circulated online claiming that the Government of Pakistan has imposed a ban on the publication, distribution, and promotion of the writings of renowned short story writer Saadat Hasan Manto by deeming his writing obscene and contrary to public decency and morality.
The official statement categorically linked the dissemination of certain content — labeled as “Fake News” and morally questionable — to a disservice against the values and unity of the nation. The Ministry emphasized that spreading fake news is unethical, illegal, and harms national integrity.
Key Orders Under the Notification:
- All editions of Manto’s works, whether in print or digital form, are to be removed immediately.
- Publishers, sellers, and online vendors must halt all sales and circulation of his books.
- TV channels, streaming platforms, and social media pages must take down all dramatizations, adaptations, or discussions about Manto’s work.
- Non-compliance will result in legal action under PECA and other relevant laws.
The notification further directs the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to oversee strict implementation.
The notification, inscribed with the date of June 22, 2025, claims to be issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (National Heritage and Culture Division).
The notification reads, “All educational institutions across Pakistan are instructed to remove the works of Saadat Hasan Manto from their syllabi, libraries, and reading lists effective immediately.”
Manto’s Legacy and Historical Censorship
While the current ban is false, Saadat Hasan Manto’s works have faced censorship in the past. Known for his unflinching portrayal of societal taboos and post-Partition trauma, Manto was frequently tried under obscenity laws, particularly for his stories like Thanda Gosht and Bu.
Despite the backlash, Manto remains a cornerstone of Urdu literature and is taught in academic institutions worldwide. His legacy is widely celebrated for challenging hypocrisy and exposing harsh social realities.
