Islamabad, June 25, 2025: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially approved an extension of the free vehicle emission testing service across the province, pushing the deadline to August 31, 2025. The decision comes as a major relief for car and motorcycle owners, especially in Lahore, who can now avail the Emission Testing System (ETS) service at no cost for an additional two months.

Originally scheduled to end on June 30, 2025, the ETS was part of the provincial government’s initiative to combat rising air pollution and smog in urban centers. The Environment Protection and Climate Change Department had planned to transfer emissions testing responsibilities to private vehicle dealerships after the deadline.

However, the government’s latest move ensures that free ETS services in Punjab will continue, allowing more time for citizens to comply without incurring costs. Secretary of the Environment Department, Raja Jahangir Anwar, confirmed that once the grace period ends, ETS operations will shift to authorized dealerships equipped with certified machines and trained personnel.

These private facilities will charge Rs. 400 per vehicle for the emissions test. This transition aims to expand accessibility and promote routine emissions checks as part of broader efforts to improve air quality in Lahore and other cities.

The department emphasized that the shift toward private sector involvement is expected to boost operational efficiency and make the emissions testing process more convenient for vehicle owners. It also aligns with the government’s long-term plan to encourage responsible environmental practices.
