Islamabad, June 26, 2025: The Punjab government is set to implement a monthly garbage tax starting July 1 as part of its Rs200 billion Suthra Punjab project. This initiative aims to improve waste management and sanitation services in both urban and rural areas across the province.

local bodies and waste management companies have started preparations to ensure smooth tax collection. The Punjab Cabinet Standing Committee on Finance and Development has formally approved the tax plan.

Under this project, new machinery was acquired, and door-to-door garbage collection began in selected districts, including Lahore. However, delays in service rollout across the province have slowed progress, prompting the government to issue strict deadlines. Authorities have been directed to finalize all arrangements before the tax goes into effect.

Garbage Tax Rates Announced

The tax will apply to both residential and commercial properties:

  • Rural Residential Areas:
    • Houses (2–5 marla): Rs200/month
    • Houses (10 marla+): Rs400/month
  • Rural Businesses:
    • Small shops: Rs300/month
    • Medium businesses: Rs700/month
    • Large businesses/factories: Rs1,000/month

Urban areas will follow a similar tiered system. However, informal settlements in Lahore and other regions will be exempt from this tax.

With tax collection approaching, all district administrations have been instructed to complete their setups immediately. The government hopes this bold move will enhance cleanliness, reduce environmental hazards, and create long-term sustainability in waste disposal systems.
