Islamabad, June 30, 2025: Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will let users scan physical documents directly through the app using their phone’s camera.

This feature is currently under testing and has been made available to a selected group of beta users through the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.25.19.21, which can be downloaded via the Google Play Store.

With the help of this new addition, users won’t need to rely on third-party apps for document scanning anymore.

New “Scan Document” Tool

The soon-to-be-launched “Scan document” feature is being added to the existing document-sharing section of the app. When selected, this option will automatically opens the phone’s camera, showing a real-time view to assist the user in perfectly framing the document for scanning. The tool is designed to offer ease of use along with functionality.

Two Modes for Capturing Documents

WhatsApp gives users two ways to scan their documents:

  • Manual Capture: Gives full control to the user, letting them take the photo exactly when they want. Ideal for adjusting lighting or positioning before snapping.
  • Auto Capture: Saves time by automatically identifying the edges of the paper and capturing the scan on its own.

Quick PDF Generation for Sharing

Once the image is taken, WhatsApp instantly processes it and turns it into a PDF file, which can be shared right away in a chat or group. This whole scanning and conversion process runs entirely on the user’s device, using Android’s built-in tools. The document will remains on the phone until the user decides to share it via WhatsApp.

As per Meta’s plan, this built-in document scanning feature will be made available to more users in the coming weeks.
