Islamabad, June 30, 2025: In a major breakthrough for mathematics educators across Punjab, the School Education Department has officially approved promotions for teachers holding BS and MSc degrees in mathematics-related disciplines.
As per the latest notification from the department’s Equivalence Committee, a BS degree in Mathematics is now formally recognized as a 16-year academic qualification, making BS-qualified teachers eligible for promotions. The committee also clarified that a two-year MSc in Computational Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Pure Mathematics will be treated as equivalent for career advancement purposes.
For years, mathematics teachers were left ineligible for departmental promotion lists, causing frustration among qualified educators. Many had been waiting nearly a decade for this long-overdue recognition.
The decision has been widely welcomed across the teaching community. Kashif Shehzad, the Provincial President of the Punjab Teachers Union (PTU), hailed the move as a step in the right direction. He emphasized, however, that similar recognition should be extended to BS degree holders in other subjects to ensure equal opportunity for all educators.
