Islamabad, July 1, 2025: The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has now included heavy vehicles in its free vehicle emission testing campaign in Lahore, aiming to reduce rising pollution levels in the city. The decision follows alarming reports linking over 83% of winter smog in Lahore to vehicular emissions.

The ongoing campaign, launched in May 2025, initially targeted motorcycles and cars. To date, 158,000 vehicles have been tested, with only 4,100 failing to meet emission standards. In a recent update, the EPA has extended the free testing deadline to August 31, 2025. After this, emission tests will become chargeable.

To improve efficiency, the EPA has reduced testing booths from 26 to 20, addressing complaints about space and operational issues. Each booth is now staffed by a three-member team and equipped with three testing devices for faster processing.

In its next phase, the EPA will test heavy vehicles without a valid Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) certificate. These vehicles will be given a one-week grace period to comply.

The EPA is also planning to extend testing hours and design a long-term strategy to tackle emissions across Punjab. Officials emphasize that immediate action is critical to improve Lahore’s air quality, which continues to suffer from unchecked vehicle exhaust.
