Islamabad, July 2, 2025: Monterrey, the final representative from the CONCACAF region, exited the Club World Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the highly anticipated Dortmund vs Monterrey clash on Tuesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The event kicked off with five sides from CONCACAF, which includes teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Only Inter Miami from MLS and Monterrey from Mexico’s LIGA MX moved past the group stage. Miami had already been eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain, 4-0, in Atlanta the previous week.
Monterrey couldn’t withstand the strength of another European club. Serhous Guirassy netted both goals for Dortmund, with Karim Adeyemi providing the assists. German Berterame pulled one back for Monterrey in the second half, but Rayados failed to level the match and force extra time.
Despite intense storms prior to kickoff and a late 9 p.m. start, the announced turnout was 31,442, increasing Atlanta’s five-match total to 191,328. The city’s final game will feature PSG and Bayern Munich this Saturday.

Of the eight teams left, two hail from Brazil — Palmeiras and Fluminense, part of South America’s CONMEBOL region; two from Germany — Dortmund and Munich; one from Spain — Real Madrid; and one from France — PSG, all from UEFA. Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal from AFC remains as well. Only three out of six regions still have teams in contention.

In the Dortmund vs Monterrey match, Guirassy struck first with a swift one-two at the edge of the box. His second came from a long ball via Ryerson and Adeyemi.
Berterame’s header brought Monterrey within one. Corona came close multiple times, and a second goal was ruled out for offside. The game ended amid controversy over a recurring discriminatory chant by Monterrey fans, prompting the referee to halt the match just as time expired.
