Islamabad, July 2, 2025: The UK government has rolled out major immigration and visa reforms aimed at cutting net migration and raising standards for skilled foreign workers — a move that will directly impact thousands of Pakistanis planning to work in Britain.
Starting 22 July 2025, the new rules — part of the UK’s latest Immigration White Paper — will remove over 100 occupations from the Skilled Worker visa list. The popular Shortage Occupation List, which made it easier for workers in certain fields to qualify for UK jobs, is being slashed to push employers to hire local talent instead.
Key Changes for Skilled Workers
Under the new plan:
- 111 jobs will be removed from the Skilled Worker list.
- Roles that don’t meet new skill and pay levels will be phased out.
- The visa route for overseas care workers will close for new applicants.
- Sub-degree level roles will no longer be eligible unless specially approved.
For many Pakistanis working in social care, this is a big setback, as the UK has long relied on overseas staff to fill staffing gaps in hospitals and care homes.
Temporary Shortage List Coming
Instead of the old Shortage Occupation List, a Temporary Shortage List will run till 2026. This will only cover critical roles in key areas like healthcare, infrastructure, or national security. Even then, employers must prove they have a plan to train local workers.
Workers hired under this list will also face tighter rules:
- No family dependents allowed.
- No salary discounts or fee cuts.
- Only approved jobs by the Migration Advisory Committee will qualify.

Higher Costs and Stricter Checks
The UK is also raising the Immigration Skills Charge for employers and tightening English language requirements for visa applicants. A new family migration policy is on the cards too, which may make it harder for Pakistanis to sponsor spouses and dependents in the future.
