Islamabad, July 11, 2025: The Punjab Transport Department launched a province-wide digital overhaul of vehicle-related services, including registration, tax payments, route permits, and fitness certification.

The move is aimed at streamlining the process an curbing inefficiencies in the current transport system.

As of July, all excise vehicle registrations across Punjab – both private and commercial – will be processed online. Vehicle owners can now apply for registration through a centralised web portal, eliminating the need for visits to excise office and manual form submissions.

The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to modernise public service delivery and introduce transparency in government departments. Officials say the transition is expected to reduce paperwork, shorten waiting times and improve monitoring of vehicles across province.
As part of the reforms, the department has also scrapped manual traffic challans, replacing them with an e-challan system. Violations will now be recorded and issued electronically, with payments made digitally via authorized platforms.

A new digital system has also been introduced for route permits, which are mandatory for public and commercial transport vehicles. Operators can now apply for and renew permits online, with tracking and compliance features embedded into the system.

Previously, obtaining a route permit often involved long delays and physical visits to transport offices.

Token tax payments, another area traditionally plagued by delays and irregularities, have also been brought online. Vehicle owners will receive automatic alerts for upcoming dues, with digital receipts issued upon payment.

In a push to improve road safety, the department made it compulsory for all private vehicles and motorcycles to obtain a one-year fitness certificate. This requirement, which has earlier applied only to commercial vehicles, is intended to ensure that all vehicles on the road meet the minimum safety requirements and emissions standards.
