Islamabad, July 16, 2025:  The provincial tax officials have been allowed to take legal action against smuggled cigarettes in shops. Through S.R.O. 1279(I)2025, released by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Tuesday, provincial tax and revenue staff can now exercise the authority given to Inland Revenue officers.

As per the FBR, by using the powers given under sub-section (4) of section 27 of the Federal Excise Act, 2005, the officers listed below are now allowed to carry out the roles and duties of Inland Revenue officers under section 26 and sub-section (1) of section 27 of the same Act.

They can act under certain listed conditions, in matters related to cigarettes found at retail shops, storage areas, and vehicles on the roads:

  • Deputy Commissioner,
  • Additional Deputy Commissioner,
  • Assistant Commissioner,
  • Central Assistant Revenue, or anyone with a similar job title in the provincial Revenue Departments.

This permission is only valid if the Excise and Taxation Officer, Assistant Excise and Taxation Officer, or any Excise and Taxation official not below the rank of BS-16 is present.
