Islamabad, July 20, 2025: In a groundbreaking move set to reshape the future of franchise cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced the relaunch of the T20 Champions League, with the first edition likely to kick off in September 2026.
Finalized during the ICC’s annual conference in Singapore, this decision signals the governing body’s commitment to bringing together the top T20 franchises from across the globe in a single, elite tournament. The revival comes over a decade after the original Champions League T20 (2008–2014), which, despite a promising start, was discontinued due to scheduling issues and financial challenges.
However, the landscape of T20 cricket has drastically changed. With franchise cricket booming globally, fan demand for high-octane cross-league matchups is at an all-time high. The ICC sees this as a timely opportunity to reintroduce a global club competition that could rival even international events in popularity and commercial value.
One of the biggest hurdles facing the new T20 Champions League is aligning the international calendar and resolving player availability conflicts, as many cricketers now play in multiple domestic leagues. The ICC is expected to introduce a fair revenue-sharing model to attract cooperation from boards and franchise owners.
Adding to the buzz is the potential involvement of Saudi Arabia as a host or major financial backer. Given the kingdom’s recent push into global sports, its interest in cricket investment could transform the tournament’s financial structure, drawing comparisons to Saudi investments in football and golf.

Yet, with growing tensions between traditional and modern formats, the cricket world awaits crucial decisions that could shape its future.
