LAHORE – July 20, 2025: In a significant step to expand educational access across the province, the Punjab government has launched two new initiatives — School on Wheels and Library on Wheels — aimed at supporting children’s education in remote and underserved areas.
The School on Wheels program will bring mobile classrooms directly to the communities where children have little or no access to formal schooling. These specially designed vehicles will function as mobile Montessori schools, equipped with child-friendly furniture, digital learning tools, and activity-based materials tailored for early childhood education.
Simultaneously, the Library on Wheels project is being developed to promote reading habits among children. These mobile libraries will be stocked with a wide range of age-appropriate books and will travel to schools, neighborhoods, and public spaces across Punjab.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced the programs during a high-level education meeting earlier this month. She also approved a province-wide school transport plan for government schools, aimed at ensuring that students living in far-flung areas can attend school regularly and safely.
These efforts follow the success of the Digital School on Wheels initiative launched in 2024, under which the government distributed 50,000 Chromebooks to students and trained 1,000 teachers in digital education methods. The digital buses are already operational and serving multiple districts.
In addition to these educational reforms, the government has launched Operation JeevanJyot 2, a province-wide campaign focused on rescuing and rehabilitating street children. The program includes DNA-based family tracing and reintegration into schools and shelters, with district-level task forces coordinating the process.

Officials say that the mobile education and library programs represent a long-term strategy to combat illiteracy, reduce school dropout rates, and promote equal opportunities for all children in Punjab.
