Islamabad 22 July: Senators during the Senate session have strongly condemned the honour killing in Balochistan, where a man and a woman were shot dead.

The incident, which came to public attention after a video surfaced on social media, sparked outrage across party lines and renewed calls for urgent action against such inhumane practices.

The case led to the arrest of 11 suspects, including prominent tribal leader Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, following a statement by Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti on social media platform X.

While debating a motion introduced by Senator Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur — which highlighted the need for policy-level reforms to end gender discrimination and empower women economically — senators denounced the act as “barbaric and inhumane.” They stressed that no civilized society can tolerate such atrocities and called for immediate and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.

Senator Irfan-ul-Haque Siddiqui criticized the provincial government for its apparent inaction, pointing out that the incident had taken place two months ago but only gained attention after the viral video. “This is not just a Balochistan issue; it’s a national disgrace,” he said. He urged the Senate to go beyond condemnation and propose concrete legal and administrative measures to prevent such tragedies.

Calling for a collective response, Siddiqui appealed to senators, especially from Balochistan, to work together in dismantling the parallel justice systems that allow individuals to act as judge, jury, and executioner.

Senator Ali Zafar recommended the establishment of a Senate monitoring committee to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted within 15 days. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” he added.

Other senators, including Sherry Rehman, Khalida Ateeb, Aimal Wali Khan, and Samina Mumtaz Zehri, also voiced their deep concern and solidarity with the victims’ families, demanding accountability and urgent reforms to end honour-based violence in Pakistan.

The House unanimously called for strict enforcement of the law, protection of women’s rights, and the eradication of customs that perpetuate gender-based violence.
