Islamabad, July 22, 2025: A rare total solar eclipse will move across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East in 2027 one of the longest eclipses of the century.
A rare celestial event will unfold in August, 2027 as a total solar eclipse shadows across parts of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Lasting up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds in some regions, it will be one of the longest solar eclipses of the century. The eclipse will begin over the eastern Atlantic and travel eastward through southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Cities like Luxor and Benghazi are expected to offer the best views, attracting scientists, tourists and sky-watchers from around the world.

Even though the total eclipse will be visible only within a narrow band, a partial eclipse will be observable across much of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. In Pakistan, cities such as Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi will witness a partial eclipse with part of the sun covered at its peak, expected around three local time.
This eclipse is particularly notable due to ideal astronomical alignment: Earth will be at its farthest point from the Sun, while the Moon will be at its closest to Earth creating a rare and extended period of total darkness. Clear weather across much of North Africa in August further boosts the chances of uninterrupted viewing.

Authorities have advised the public to observe safety precautions, such as using certified solar viewing glasses or indirect methods, as looking directly at the Sun can cause serious eye damage. Awareness campaigns and viewing guidelines are expected to increase as the event nears.
