Islamabad 30 July: According to the latest World Giving Report released by the UK-based Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in partnership with the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (PCP), Pakistan ranks 17th globally for its generosity, measured through helping strangers, donating money, and volunteering time across 101 countries.

Pakistan has consistently ranked among the world’s most generous countries over the past five years, with charitable giving deeply embedded in its cultural and religious fabric.

The nation donates more than 1% of its GDP to charity annually—placing it in the same league as richer countries like the United Kingdom and Canada, and nearly double the amount donated by India.

This year’s report highlights Pakistan’s standout performance in financial donations, where citizens ranked 17th globally in terms of the proportion of income given. From religious giving through Zakat and Sadaqah to informal acts of kindness, the nation’s spirit of giving remains unwavering.

A survey conducted by the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy in 2021 found that approximately 98% of Pakistanis participate in charitable activities, whether by giving money, in-kind donations, or volunteering.

On average, an adult Pakistani spends about Rs 10,000 per year in charity, commonly driven by religious motivations and informal support to individuals within their community.  Estimates indicate total annual giving by Pakistanis to exceed Rs 240 billion—over US$ 2 billion .

Digital philanthropy is expanding rapidly: online donations surged more than threefold from Rs 44 million in 2023 to Rs 148 million in 2024.

While national bodies and nonprofits play a growing role in structured philanthropy, a substantial portion of giving remains informal—directed toward individuals or grass‑roots needs—rather than routed through larger institutions
