Islamabad 3 August: During a joint press conference on Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Iran’s right to develop peaceful nuclear power, standing alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The statement came as Pezeshkian concluded his two-day official visit to Islamabad, marking a significant moment in Pak-Iran relations amid global scrutiny of Tehran’s nuclear program.

Addressing reporters at the presser, following bilateral talks, Shehbaz emphasized Pakistan’s stance, stating, “Pakistan stands by Iran for the acquisition of peaceful nuclear power.” He highlighted the importance of international cooperation in ensuring nuclear technology serves peaceful purposes, aligning with global non-proliferation norms.

Pezeshkian, on his maiden visit as president, echoed the sentiment, underscoring Iran’s commitment to using nuclear energy for development while addressing concerns raised by Western nations.

The visit, which began on Saturday, August 2, saw discussions on boosting bilateral trade—targeting an increase from $2 billion to $10 billion annually—and enhancing cooperation in energy and regional security.

Shehbaz also pledged Pakistan’s support in defusing tensions between Iran and the United States, a gesture analysts see as a strategic move in a shifting geopolitical landscape. The joint presser followed a warm reception at Nur Khan Air Base, where Shehbaz, alongside Deputy PM Ishaq Dar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, welcomed Pezeshkian.

Social media reactions on X reflect a mix of optimism and debate, with @IranPakistanFriend calling it “a bold step for peace,” while @GlobalDiplomacy raised concerns over nuclear proliferation risks. As of 05:02 PM PKT, the press conference has intensified discussions on the Iran-Pakistan alliance, with both leaders set to monitor the outcomes of their agreements in the coming months.
