Islamabad, Aug 4, 2025: Pakistan Railways is set for a major transformation as the federal government allocates Rs22 billion under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the fiscal year 2025–26. The funds will power essential infrastructure upgrades, improve service quality, and modernize operations.
According to official sources, Rs12 billion from the total amount will focus on the rehabilitation of railway tracks, signaling systems, and communication infrastructure—areas that have long needed attention. The remaining Rs10 billion is dedicated to rolling stock maintenance and various improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing passenger experience.

In a sign of progress, Pakistan Railways recorded an impressive Rs7.48 billion in revenue in July 2025 alone, surpassing last year’s figure for the same month by Rs1.46 billion. This boost comes as the department continues to rely less on federal funding, with operational enhancements now largely financed through internally generated income.
One of the critical focus areas has been the Sukkur division, where aging tracks previously posed major safety concerns. Rehabilitation efforts in this region have drastically reduced derailments and increased travel safety. Meanwhile, the department is also revamping major railway stations by introducing modern amenities such as escalators, upgraded restrooms, improved dining areas, and onboard WiFi for passengers.
With its new strategy in place, Pakistan Railways is aiming to cross the Rs100 billion revenue mark by the end of the current fiscal year. In FY 2024–25, the department had already reached Rs93 billion in earnings, with the Karachi division contributing significantly through both passenger and freight services.
